It’s hard not to take your brakes for granted. You use them every day without a second thought. Brake maintenance ensures that you can count on them every time you press down on the brake pedal, but what would you do if your brakes failed? We here at J&M Auto Service work tirelessly to ensure our customers never experience the fear of brake failure. Let’s talk about the signs of brake trouble that you shouldn’t ignore.
Strange Noises
Perhaps the most obvious sign of brake trouble is noise. Your brakes are silent when they are operating as they should be. Grinding noises indicate that your brake pads need to be replaced because their surface has worn away. Squeaking or squealing brakes could be an indicator of overheating brakes, a problem with the pad insulation, or a problem with the brake pad clips.
Strange Sensations
You should never feel your brakes, either. You may feel scraping, which is also a sign that the brake pad surface has worn away. If you feel wobbling or vibration in your brake pedal or steering wheel, you may have warped rotors that need to be resurfaced or a problem with one of the brake calipers. Braking in your automobile should always be smooth.
Fluid Leaks
Brake fluid is usually brown or red. When the fluid is new, it can be so light that it’s almost clear. As the fluid ages, it turns browner in its hue. Brake fluid will leak near your wheels. If you see brown fluid leaking underneath the engine, it is more likely motor oil. If your brake fluid is leaking, however, this is a serious problem that could cause you to lose your brakes.
Strange Pedal Sensations
We talked above about strange sensations in your brake pedal in terms of wobbling or vibration, but your brake pedal should always give you the same amount of resistance every time you use it, as well. Softness, sponginess, or sinking should never happen when you depress the brake pedal. If it does, you’ve got a brake fluid or master cylinder problem.
Burning Smells/Smoke
Finally, burning smells coming from the brakes is a serious sign that your brakes are overheating. It’s important to note that when the brakes get too hot, they’ll fail. If you smell burning chemicals, smell burning carpet accompanied by squealing, or see smoke coming from the brakes, pull over immediately. You will lose your brakes if they are overheating.
