Six Causes of a Check Engine Warning

In 2019, the check engine light was tested in a study to determine its accuracy. The results proved that the check engine light is nearly 100 percent accurate in alerting drivers of engine problems, including problems that have no other signs. J&M Auto Service can determine why your check engine light is on. Here are six common causes of a check engine dashboard warning.

1. Clogged Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter has a 10-year lifespan. If you are driving an older automobile and your check engine light comes on, it’s possible that the catalytic converter is clogged and needs to be replaced. You may also see black exhaust smoke flowing out of the tailpipe that smells like rotten eggs.

2. Faulty EVAP Control System

The EVAP control system is designed to prevent fuel from evaporating out of your automobile into the environment. This includes the gas cap. If any part of the system is failing, or if your gas cap has not created a seal over the gas tank, your check engine light will come on because fuel is evaporating.

3. Faulty Engine Control Module

The engine control module is your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s main computer chip. It works with a system of sensors to make sure everything is operating efficiently. If the engine control module goes bad, the check engine light will turn on. Your engine may also shut off and refuse to turn back on.

4. Malfunctioning MAF Sensor

The mass airflow sensor measures the engine’s air intake from the outside. It can malfunction if it gets too dirty. When this happens, your check engine light will turn on and you may end up with either a lean or rich fuel mixture in the combustion chamber that affects your engine’s performance.

5. Malfunctioning O2 Sensor

The same is true with the oxygen sensor. This sensor lasts, on average, about 90,000 miles. Once it goes bad, it needs to be replaced or you will end up with engine performance issues due to an imbalance of air and fuel in the combustion chamber. You will also receive a check engine warning on the dashboard.

6. Worn Spark Plugs/Wires

Finally, worn spark plugs and wires can cause your engine to sputter and misfire. It can also make the engine stall in severe cases. Aside from the symptoms, you will end up with the check engine warning on your dashboard that will not turn off until you replace the plugs and wires.
