Year after year, the automotive industry releases new safety features that rival anything they came up with in the past. It’s exciting for us auto geeks but also reassuring to drivers throughout the country. Decades ago people never even wore seatbelts, if their car had them at all. Today, airbags, cameras, and sensors make driving safe and almost accident-free. J&M Auto Service lists automotive safety features to look for in your next car, truck, or SUV.
Crash Ratings
This isn’t as much a safety feature as a reassurance mechanism. If you are in the market for a new automobile, you can check its NTSA crash rating on their website. This is the rating that ranks how well automobiles handle different crash tests with crash test dummies inside of them. The higher the rating, the better a vehicle withstands the stress of high-impact accidents, i.e., the safer the vehicle.
Airbags
Newer automobiles are not only equipped with front-seat airbags but also airbags to protect passengers in the event of a side collision or rollover. If you drive an SUV or other top-heavy automobile, you are at greater risk of a rollover incident, and the airbags deploy beside you to protect you when your body crashes against the side of the vehicle. They also deploy if you are hit in the side at high speeds.
Cameras
Not so new but still not found in all automobiles on the road, either, backup cameras offer drivers a full view of what’s behind their vehicles when they’re backing up. This increases safety when backing out of your driveway or parking spaces. You can see everything behind your vehicle, including pedestrians, other drivers backing out behind you, pets, and inanimate objects. No more running over the tricycle.
Sensors
Finally, over the last couple of years, automobile manufacturers have been testing sensors that warn drivers of impending doom. These sensors monitor the front, back, and sides of the automobile and alert drivers of danger. In some cases, the sensors will trigger an action, such as braking before the driver does, to avoid a collision. The sensors can also tell when you’re eyes are not on the road.
