Four Ways to Take Better Care of Your Car This Year

Every year you might make resolutions about taking better care of yourself, but how about your car? It needs some TLC, too, and the really good news is that it’s a lot easier to take better care of your car than you might think. Better yet? We can help you here at J&M Transmission & Auto Service.

Take an Objective Look at How You Drive

You really do need to be super honest with yourself for a minute, because how you drive definitely affects your car. So, if you’re consistently driving fast, that means your brakes and your suspension get a little bit more wear and tear than if someone who drove a little slower consistently drove your car. Speeding up and slowing down quickly also affects other parts of your car, like the engine itself.

Go Through Your Owner’s Manual

If it’s been a while since you’ve looked through your owner’s manual, now is the time. There’s usually at least one chart that gives you information about the type of maintenance you need done and how often it should be done. Some of these maintenance items might seem arbitrary, but they aren’t. They help you to stay on top of issues that are preventable and keep your automobile safe and reliable.

Double-Check What Services You’ve Had Done Recently

Now that you’re planning to keep better track of your car’s needs, it’s important to know when you last had certain services done. Double-check when you last had your tires rotated, when you got an oil change, and other services on the list. Some of the services on your manufacturer’s chart won’t be required often, maybe tens of thousands of miles between those services. Others need much more frequent attention, such as oil changes every 3,000 miles.

Take Your Car in as Soon as You Notice Something Isn’t Right

The number one thing that you can do to take the best care possible of your car is to make sure that as soon as you notice something odd, take the car to a trusted mechanic. If you put off those visits when you do notice something, the problem is almost always a lot bigger by the time you do get to the shop. It’s much easier, and less expensive, to deal with the problem when it’s still small.
