Signs Your Starter is Going Bad

If you want to know what a starter does, all you need to do is look at its name. Basically, it is a tiny little motor that sends power to your engine to make it start. When you turn your key you expect your engine to fire up, but what if it doesn’t? To avoid this frustration, J&M Transmission & Auto Service wants you to know the signs that your starter is going bad.

Clicking Sounds

You get in your car, you turn the key, and you get a clicking sound.Yikes. Essentially that is your starting begging you you to get it checked out and repaired. Anytime you hear a clicking, grinding, or whirring sound it is time to visit J&M Transmission and Auto Service.

Only the Lights are On

When things start to die you immediately want to blame the battery. If you turn the key and everything fails to come on except your lights, it is time to have your mechanic take a look at your starter.

Your Engine is Dead

Typically the first thing you do when you can’t start your engine is to give it a jumpstart, right? But what if your engine won’t start even after you have jumped it? This could mean two things, either your battery is completely dead or you have a broken starter.

Overheated Electrical Components

If your starter is dead and you continue to try to start your car without having it repaired it can cause electrical issues in your car. When your starter overheats it leads to blown fuses and short circuits. If you notice the smell of something burning or see smoke coming from under the hood when you are trying to start your car, stop what you are doing and call J&M Transmission & Auto Service.

Oil Leak

Obviously, a busted starter is not something that will cause an oil leak in your vehicle. However, an oil leak could be the cause of our starter issue. Pop your hood and take a look.  Locate your starter and see if there is oil on it. If there is, that is your problem and you need to call us.

What Can Cause Starter Problems

Starter failure could be due to a variety of problems, the most common one being age. Starters, like other parts of your vehicle, have lifespans. If your starter isn’t past its prime the starter failure could be because of things like corroded batteries or loose connections.

From oil changes to starter repair to engine service, J&M Transmission & Auto Service is here to help you with all of your automotive needs. Call us today to schedule your next appointment.
