We’ve talked about oil changes in previous posts, and it is important to have your oil changed throughout the summer to keep your vehicle’s engine healthy and happy. There are other maintenance services, too, that you should consider before the weather gets too hot. Here’s what they are and why they’re important. J&M Auto Service recommends summer maintenance for the following systems.
Air Conditioner
You probably turn on your car, truck, or SUV’s AC once the temperatures in Tea, SD, get into the high 70s or the 80s. You expect your vehicle’s air conditioner to immediately begin cooling down the cabin. If you haven’t had your AC serviced in a long time, it might not be able to do its job. Keeping cool in the summer heat can stress your vehicle and you if the air conditioner doesn’t work.
Air Filter
When was the last time you had your air filter changed? If you can’t remember, it’s probably time to change it. The air filter helps keep your engine running efficiently; the cabin filter helps keep the air in your vehicle’s cabin clean. Have these filters changed now to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and the air quality blowing through the vents, especially if the air in the cabin smells musty.
Battery
Cold winter weather can drain your car, truck, or SUV’s battery, so have it tested before we’re in the heart of summer. If your battery is three years old or older, it’s reaching the end of its lifespan. If you see corrosion on the battery terminals, it’s leaking battery acid. A battery inspection confirms your vehicle’s battery is in good health and can handle the added stress of the running AC.
Cooling System
If you ask a ton of people how often you should get your radiator flushed, you’ll get a ton of answers. Check your owner’s manual to see what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends and then have the cooling system flushed, inspected, and refilled if it’s due. If your engine coolant looks dirty or is low, a flush and refill is a good idea even if it isn’t time for the maintenance service yet.
Tires
Finally, your vehicle’s tires are designed to handle road heat and friction, but this doesn’t mean that the hotter asphalt that accompanies summer weather isn’t hard on them. If your tires are brand new, just make sure it isn’t time to rotate them. If they have a few miles on them, consider a tire inspection to make sure they still have enough tread. It might be time for new tires.
